Distinguished Professor of Law and Communication at UCLA. He was previously a Distinguished Professor in the School of Law, the STS Program, and the Department of History at UC Davis, where he was the founding director for the Center for Science and Innovation Studies, and an Associate faculty member of the Cultural Studies Program and the Critical Theory Program. Prior to UC Davis, he was Professor of History of Science at Harvard. He has also taught at Stanford, the University of Chicago, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), UCLA’s Department of History, and the European University at St Petersburg. A recipient of a Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from the NSF, the Mellon Foundation, the ACLS, and the Russian Ministry of Science and Education, Dr. Biagioli has been awarded fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (Stanford). Dr. Biagioli has authored and edited eight books, including Gaming the Metrics: New Ecologies of Academic Misconduct (with A. Lippman, MIT Press, 2020); From Russia with Code (with Vincent Lepinay, Duke University Press, 2019); Making and Unmaking Intellectual Property (with P. Jaszi and M. Dr. Gonzalez-Billaut is Full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Chile, Director of the Geroscience Center for Brain Health and Metabolism (GERO) and Adjunct Professor at The Buck Institute for Research on Aging. After receiving the degree of  Biochemist in Chile, he obtained his PhD in Cell Molecular Biology at the Center for Molecular Biology Severo Ochoa in Spain.

Currently, Dr. Gonzalez-Billaut is the president of the Chilean Society for Neuroscience, member of the international advisory board of the San Francisco Declaration of Research Assessment – DORA - and the first Chilean researcher elected European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO - member. He is serving on the advisory committee for the Grants Sub direction of the Chilean Agency for Research and Development. 

Dr. Gonzalez-Billaut is profoundly interested in improving the mechanisms of research assessment, seeking to promote fair and transparent evaluation of academics.

Alexander Kellner has a PhD from the Department of Geological Sciences, Lamont Doherty Geological Observatory, Columbia University/American Museum of Natural History, New York, United States. Dr. Kellner is Professor at the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He is a curator of the Museum`s  geological and paleontological departments. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, an Honorary Member of the New York Paleontological Society and Sociedad Paleontologica de Chile, and Associate Researcher at the American Museum of Natural History and the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (China). He received the 2010 award from The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in the Earth Sciences category and was elected a TWAS member in 2013. Dr. Kellner has a strong publication record and is an experienced reviewer. He is editor-in-chief of the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

Ana Palmero holds a J.D. degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was trained in Bioethics at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO).

Since 2016, she has served as coordinator on the Research Ethics Program of the Directorate of Research for Health at the Ministry of Health of Argentina, where she provides legal and ethical advice on human research and manages the presentation of Ministry rules proposals on research ethics. She is currently a consultant for the Bioethics Program at Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for the development of guidance to strengthen research ethics systems in LATAM during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She is a member of the Ethics Review Board of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) and serves on the Steering Committee of the Global Forum on Bioethics in Research. She serves as coordinator of the National Research Ethics Advisory Committee and is member of the Research Ethics Committee of the Dr. Ramos Mejia General Hospital, Argentina.

She is an external researcher of the Center for Studies of State and Society (CEDES), Argentina. Her interests include research ethics regulations and human research governance systems. Her current research focuses on biobanking governance, and human gene editing governance and public engagement.

Ana had authored several articles on research ethics regulations.

Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Psychiatry’s Division of Ethics and the Program in Ethics in Science and Medicine. Her work focuses on cultural aspects of ethics in clinical medicine, biomedical science, and public health, particularly international standards of research ethics and education in the responsible conduct of research (RCR). Dr. Heitman teaches research ethics and RCR in the Center for Translational Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and is an ethics facilitator for medical students. She also leads ethics and RCR education for two training grants on cardiovascular health disparities research through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Dr. Heitman is a National Associate of the US National Research Council and has been chair or member of eight US National Academy of Sciences programs in research integrity education in the Middle East, North Africa, Indonesia, and Malaysia. In 2015-16, Dr. Heitman co-chaired the National Academies’ Committee on Gene Drive Research with Non-Human Organisms, and she is currently a member of the Working Group on Gene Drive Research of the NIH's Novel and Exceptional Technology and Research Advisory Committee.

Dr. Heitman is Co-director of the NIH Fogarty International Center-sponsored Collaborative Research Ethics Education Program between Mozambique’s Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and UT Southwestern. She was previously director of a similar program in Costa Rica, in collaboration with the Costa Rican National Children’s Hospital. She is a Co-Investigator and Mentor on the NHLBI-sponsored research training grants Obesity Health Disparities PRIDE and Jackson Heart Study Graduate Training and Education Center with the University of Mississippi Medical Center. 

Dr. Heitman came to UT Southwestern in late 2016 from Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society, where she was a member of the Academy for Excellence in Teaching and served as a clinical ethics consultant and chair of the Ethics Committee. She was previously on the faculty the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, Texas, and was clinical ethicist at Hermann Hospital and Lyndon Baines Johnson General Hospital.

Dr. Heitman received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies in 1988 from Rice University’s joint program in biomedical ethics with the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center.

He has also a Specialization in Bioethics.  Along his career, he has been involved in clinical trials of infectious diseases as researcher, clinical monitor, auditor, consultant and coordinating clinical development plans. For more than 10 years, he supported WHO-sponsored clinical trials in Latin America, Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia. Currently, he leads clinical development of immunobiological products, mainly vaccines, as Clinical Research Medical Director at Instituto Butantan, a public health research institution in São Paulo, Brazil.

Founder and director of the Open Scholarship Initiative (OSI), a UN-sponsored global initiative created to help design the future of more open methods of research publishing and communication. He is also the founder and executive director of the Science Communication Institute (SCI), a US-based nonprofit focused on improving the communication that happens inside science. Prior to OSI and SCI, Glenn served as a senior project manager and Institutional Review Board member with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, a communications director with the University of Washington, the founder and president of Castle Pacific Publishing Company, managing editor and webmaster at the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation, associate editor for the Riverside Publishing Company, and a caseworker and field representative for the US House of Representatives. He has also authored, ghost-written and edited a number of books, founded and run several charities focusing on kids in need and the helping the homeless, and in his spare time, has run for public office, and served on several boards and community organizations. Glenn currently coaches youth baseball and basketball, and is an active school volunteer. He holds two undergraduate degrees, in history and physics/astronomy, from the University Washington, and a graduate degree in public administration from American University. Glenn lives in Seattle with his wife and 13 year-old son.

Founder director of the UC San Diego Research Ethics Program (1997), the San Diego Research Ethics Consortium (2006), and the Ethics Service (2010) for the NIH CTSA-funded UC San Diego Clinical and Translational Research Institute; and he is co-founding director for the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology (2004).

 

He leads NIH- and NSF-funded research on goals, content, and methods for teaching research ethics.  Internationally, he has had lead roles with representatives of Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan in setting national research ethics agendas, and is now helping to establish the Asia Pacific Research Integrity (APRI) network. Professor of Anatomy and Chair of the Department of Research in Biomedicine and Health at the University of Split School of Medicine, Split, Croatia, and holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK. She is the Co-editor in Chief of the Journal of Global Health and Past President of the European Association of Science Editors. She chairs the Research Committee of The World Association of Medical Editors. Prof. Marušić is also the Co-Chair of the Cochrane Scientific Committee. Prof. Marušić is the founder of the Cochrane Croatia and takes responsibility for Research as its Research Coordinator. She also founded the Croatian Centre for Global Health at the University of Split School of Medicine. She is on the Steering Group of the EQUATOR (Enhancing the Quality And Transparency Of Health Research) Network. She has a number of significant academic achievements including authorship of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and was heavily involved with creating the policy of mandatory registration of clinical trials in public registries, which helped change the legal regulation of clinical trials worldwide. She has received a number of awards for her research, most recently a Meritorious Award from the Council of Science Editors in 2016.

An epidemiologist who has spent most of her career working in both the public and private healthcare sectors; both within government as well as in the non- governmental sectors. This has given her an excellent understanding of working with multiple stakeholders and navigating the interface between science and policy. She played a key role in controlling the SARS outbreak in 2003 in Singapore. Since then she has worked with multiple public health organizations and guideline panels in evidence-based policymaking. In her current position at the VUmc, she is leading the development of one of the largest nation-wide surveys to study research integrity in academia, namely what factors help or hinder responsible conduct of research among scientists in The Netherlands.
